Jerry L. Atherton
Jerry Atherton graduated with highest honors from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1979 and was admitted as a member to the State Bar of Texas on May 26, 1980. As a law student, Jerry was a published author in the St. Mary’s Law Journal, served as Chairman of the Board of Advocates, was the President of the legal fraternity, Phi Delta Phi, and its outstanding graduating member in 1980. Immediately upon graduating from law school, Jerry and his wife, Kathy, moved to Tyler where he has practiced continuously since 1980. Jerry is a member of the State Bar of Texas, a Fellow in the Texas Bar Foundation, and has served as both President and a Director of the Smith County Bar Association. Jerry is an Eagle Scout and is a strong supporter of the East Texas Area Council of Boy Scouts. Jerry has been a member of the Tyler Junior College Paralegal Advisory Committee since 1990 and currently serves as its Chairman. He also has served as a Director of St. Paul Children’s Foundation and The Brook Hill School. Members of Dayspring United Methodist Church since 2008, Jerry and Kathy were formerly members of Marvin United Methodist Church for twenty-eight years, where Jerry served as a member of the Administrative Board and was an adult and singles Sunday School teacher. Jerry earned both BBA (69′) and MBA (71′) degrees at the University of North Texas, and, prior to his legal career, he worked as a securities analyst for a large pension fund management company and was the Assistant Treasurer for The Associates Corporation, a consumer and commercial finance company in the Dallas area. Perhaps the most fun job he’s ever had was being the Official Scorekeeper for the San Antonio Spurs basketball team while a law student from 1978-1980.
